Newspaper Coverage

Dedicated newspaper coverage:

Lansing State Journal: greenandwhite.com
Coverage by Graham Couch, and Brian Calloway. Graham is a talented writer who brings solid perspective and analysis. Calloway is the lead Preps writer and covers a variety of non-revenue MSU sports. MSU’s hometown newspaper without being a homer news source. Does a good job of critically analyzing MSU athletics and delivering it on a timely basis.

MLive: mlive.com/spartans
Advance Publications owns several newspapers in Michigan. MLive is the site they all roll into to save money so each paper doesn’t have to host it’s own website. Coverage mainly by Kyle Austin. Also, Matt Wenzel, Brendan Savage, Jared Purcell, often covers MSU as well.
The Ann Arbor News
The Bay City Times
The Flint Journal
The Grand Rapids Press
Jackson Citizen Patriot
Kalamazoo Gazette
Muskegon Chronicle
The Saginaw News

State News: statenews.com/section/sports
One of the most renowned and highly decorated student newspapers in America having garnered numerous national awards across the decades. Michigan State University’s student newspaper. State News Sports on Twitter here.

Detroit Free Press: freep.com/sports/spartans
Coverage by Chris Solari, Shawn Windsor and now Nick Baumgardner. Chris is the new beat writer for MSU athletics. Shawn covers a variety of sports, sometimes MSU. Nick came over from mLive.  Freep is a “Blue Wall” newspaper, as decades of coverage skews towards UM favoritism and dismissive and condescending tone toward MSU. Also extreme emphasis on any problems at MSU to the exclusion of a balance of good news coming from the institution.

Detroit News: detroitnews.com/sports/michigan-state
Coverage by Matt Charboneau. Compared to other newspapers listed here, arguably the thinnest MSU coverage. And if you watch the actual times articles are posted, often the last to report MSU developments. DetNews is a “Blue Wall” newspaper going back decades, coverage tends to be negative toward MSU and in favor of UM, if not at times openly hostile towards MSU.
